Case Study: Scitegrity

Based at Discovery Park since its formation, Scitegrity delivers advanced chemical regulation software used by leading pharmaceutical firms worldwide, combining local roots with global innovation and award-winning compliance expertise.

Scitegrity provides expert chemical regulation software, working with five of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies in the world. The founding of Scitegrity in 2011 coincided with the opening of Discovery Park, making it one of the first new businesses on the site.
Founders Joe Bradley and Ian Johns, both with many years of working in the pharmaceutical industry at Pfizer, Roche and AstraZeneca, had always lived locally and wanted to remain in the area. Having spotted there was no tool available to identify regulated chemicals for scientists involved in R&D, they took the plunge and set-up Scitegrity.

Behind the innovation

Scitegrity’s online platform – Controlled Substances Squared – automatically screens millions of chemicals against controlled and regulated substance legislation in 28 countries around the world and is used by many of the top life science companies at the enterprise level, integrated into their own lab software for ease of use.

Thanks to its complex algorithms, data sets and the team’s world leading expertise, Scitegrity is able to utilise its capabilities to support the chemicals, pharmaceutical and biotech industry in the safe and legal supply of R&D chemicals. The team’s knowledge of chemical laws is unparalleled, often consulting directly with the regulators themselves.

With increasing compliance demands affecting multiple sectors, Scitegrity is now using its algorithms to extend its offering to include dangerous goods assessments of chemicals, as well as generating tariff classification codes to support compliant export and trade.

The benefits of being based at Discovery Park

Scitegrity’s headquarters are in Discovery Park’s Startup Zone, with hot-desks for hybrid and remote working. This flexibility allows the team to hire specialist chemical or coding talent from anywhere, whilst still providing a base and community for the team to come together.

As former Pfizer employees, Joe and Ian both worked at the site when it was solely Pfizer owned. When Scitegrity was formed and Discovery Park took over ownership of the facilities, there was an initial degree of uncertainty.

Joe Bradley, CEO added: “There was the widely held view that the site could close, but thanks to the vision of its owners, it’s become an excellent example of turning around such a major site. Discovery Park has nurtured a community of likeminded scientists and the businesses needed to support their work. Being onsite has given us many networking opportunities and access to support and growth advice. It’s a Kent success story.”

The team is involved with the Discovery Park scientific community, regularly attending and participating in events such as the STEM Soapbox networking event. Scitegrity have clients who are also based on site, benefitting from the engaged ecosystem which continues to grow.

“On a personal level, Discovery Park has given us the opportunity to create our own successful business with a platform for further growth, and the area provides us with that all important work-life balance.”

Scitegrity was recently awarded with the  prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade, recognising the nation’s most outstanding businesses. Scitegrity is now the fourth King’s Award winner located at Discovery Park, which also includes A4P, Logical Biological and eXroid.

“Discovery Park nurtured a community of likeminded scientists and the businesses needed to support their work. Being onsite has given us many networking opportunities and access to support and growth advice. It’s a Kent success story.”

Future growth plans

After 15 years at Scitegrity following a successful career in pharmaceutical data management, Founder Ian Johns retired earlier this year. Co-founder Joe Bradley continues to lead the company as CEO, with no plans to slow the pace of innovation. Reflecting on the journey, Joe Bradley said: “The fact that we work directly for such major names in the pharma industry speaks volumes about the quality of what we offer. We’re confident we’ll continue to grow as other industries adapt to compliance and regulation, and regulatory frameworks evolve.”

The team is strategically focused on expansion, with an upcoming projects in the pipeline which could bring new market opportunities. Watch this space.
