The GWS (Global Workplace Solutions) Engineering & Laboratory Support team provides support for the Pfizer Small Molecule clinical portfolio in the manufacture of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) at the Sandwich UK Pilot Plant, and Oral Solid Dose Manufacturing plus supporting laboratories for new and emerging pharmaceuticals used in clinical trials across a range of therapeutic areas.

Our team is responsible for the installation, continuous improvement and maintenance of pharmaceutical equipment, facilities, and laboratory assets. These include state of the art equipment such as batch reactors, continuous manufacturing processes, tablet manufacturing equipment, utilities, HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning) systems and laboratory equipment including liquid and gas chromatography mass spectrometers and high tech automated high throughput screening.

You will join and work closely with an experienced team of highly motivated engineers and support staff, as well as working in partnership with contract service providers.

In this highly regulated industry, you will need to conduct all activities in accordance with regulations and standards set by the Pharmaceutical and Environmental, Health & Safety regulatory bodies as well as maintaining Good Manufacturing Practices.



You will have the exciting and varied opportunity to work across multiple manufacturing areas including Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient Synthesis, Oral Solid Dose Manufacture, and the supporting laboratories.

You will be designated as the project lead for minor projects up to £250K designed to improve equipment, manufacturing process capability, reliability, and compliance plus supporting senior engineers with major projects up to £10M.

The role will offer opportunities to liaise with external partner organisations as well as other Pfizer sites.



The successful candidate will be provided the opportunity to develop further their university knowledge and experience in a highly regulated industry.

Report writing at key project milestones to ensure clear and concise communication to management & stakeholders.
European and UK Environmental Health & Safety Regulations used extensively across industry, including the application of risk assessments, method statements and change controls.
Gain an understanding of how an adaptable and efficient engineering team prioritise and schedule work as well as day to day operations to meet objectives inside a challenging industry.
Establish a strong professional network within the pharmaceutical industry.

You will work with the highly skilled engineering team and customer groups to identify potential improvement projects and drive these to completion. You will lead multiple projects in addition to being involved in the plan, design, and implementation stages of others, liaising with external suppliers, and using your engineering expertise.

Other responsibilities will include:

Understand company requirements and create specifications and designs for the engineering solutions
Review and update engineering procedures and processes
Ensure maintenance requirements are fully catered for including training, spare part supply, and maintenance schedules
Carry out Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) to address and resolve repeat failures & provide engineering expertise to troubleshoot problems and provide solutions
Optimisation studies to define value adding maintenance strategies
Contractor management and supervision to deliver projects on time & on budget
Partner with the Discovery Park engineering team to ensure agreed service level agreements are met
Producing drawings with AutoCAD to support projects
Helping to oversee the sites energy management, including monitoring the sites energy consumption, working with the site landlord to identify opportunities for energy savings and evaluating different engineering projects impact on energy consumption.
Qualifications: Applicant is expected to have the qualifications and experience below plus have the right to work in the UK


A graduate Engineering degree, either in mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering that included a placement or demonstrating professional work experience.

Applicants must be motivated and possess a strong work ethic, the ability to meet deadlines and to take ownership of projects as well as being an open, honest and an ethical person, with excellent attention to detail.

Other personality traits such as being a self-starter able to operate with the minimum of supervision and possesses excellent communication skills would be advantageous.

The ideal candidate will have excellent technical ability and knowledge as well as strong interpersonal skills. They should be capable of applying their university qualifications, work experience and understanding to real life applications as well as showing a willingness to continue learning.

Knowledge of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) as it relates to manufacturing operations and GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) would be advantageous
