Tenants raise £1,260 at annual charity golf day 24 July, 2017

Discovery Park’s annual charity golf day brought companies from across the site together once again for a day of good natured competition, in aid of an amazing local cause. In total, a grand £1,260 was raised for Your simPal – Discovery Park’s charity of the year.

The event took place on Thursday, 20 July, at Prince’s Golf Club in Sandwich, with 12 teams tee-ing for victory on the famous championship course.

Your simPal, based at Discovery Park, is a unique cancer support service, which offers pre-paid SIM cards and mobile phones, if required, allowing people living with cancer and their families to stay connected.

And the winner is…

The 18-hole charity golf day was won by Mylan with Communicate in second place and Kreston Reeves in third. As well as being a lot of fun, the event gave competitors an insight into the difference Your simPal is making, as well as raising hundreds of pounds.

The wooden spoon award was handed to Brachers, which came in last place despite a valiant effort.  Prizes up for grabs ranged from a luxury hotel stay, cream teas and a la carte meals, hairdressing vouchers, a GPS gold band watch and a Scalextric set.

These were donated by a number of tenants of Discovery Park and surrounding businesses.

Among the companies taking part in this year’s event were Communicate, Albion House, Mylan, Pure Contribution, Kreston Reeves, Tyrrell Systems, NatWest, OFP Timber Frame Homes and Brachers LLP.

Kimberley Anderson, Corporate Relations Manager at Discovery Park, said:
“We’ve had another fantastic charity golf day this year, fundraising for our charity of the year Your simPal.

“It’s been great to combine a fun afternoon out with our lovely tenants, while also raising lots of money for a good cause.

We were supported greatly by the local community with businesses onsite and the surrounding area donating prizes to our raffle, which helped enormously in achieving the final total.

“Discovery Park will continue to do all we can to raise funds in various ways, before the end of the year, to support this unique support service which we are lucky to have supporting not just our community in South East Kent and the UK, but people around the world.”

Making a difference

Blair Papworth, Founder of Your simPal, said:
“We are so grateful for the amazing support which we have received from Discovery Park and from so many fellow tenants and friends on site.

“We were humbled by the amount of money raised at this year’s golf day, this will make such an incredible difference to the work we do supporting those living with cancer across the UK.

“Our service is such a simple concept, however, by providing free calls, text and mobiles, we are helping to prevent loneliness, isolation and ease some financial strain felt by many whilst living with cancer. Without donations, we are unable to provide our much needed service.”
